Malaysia Women completed a comfortable 9 wicket victory over Singapore Women in their opening match of the women’s T20 event at the SEA Games.
Malaysia won the toss and put the visitors into bat. Winifred Anne Duraisingam (1/15) began immaculately with a wicket in the opening over. Ainna Hamizah (1/7) struck in the next over from the other end, removing key player GK Diviya for a duck. Singapore never recovered from the early blows and were pegged down by the tight bowling of Zumika Azmi (2/12) and Mahirah Izzati (1/9). They could only limp to 55/6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 56 to win, Malaysia lost Yusrina Yaakop (9) in the second over. That was to be the only setback of the innings as Christina Nina Baret (20*) and Winifred Anne Duraisingam (25* off 15) shared an unbeaten stand of 46 in just 5.3 overs. Christina sealed the win by hitting a boundary of Diviya with 75 balls still remaining.
An excellent performance from the Malaysian team. They should make the final, providing they win one of their two remaining matches. On Friday, they take on favourites Thailand.
